Abstract

1421830 Vitreous silica articles CORNING GLASS WORKS 17 April 1973 18423/73 Heading C1M Vitreous silica articles are produced from a moulded body 12 composed of particles of crystalline silica or a glass having an SiO 2 content in excess of 90% by weight, by supporting the mould body on a graphite mandrel 24 having thin, perforated walls and an outer surface complementary to the interior surface of the body 12; and then sintering the moulded body in an inert gas atmosphere and at a temperature between 1725‹ and 2200‹ C. To produce opaque silica sintering is carried out in a helium atmosphere. For transparent silica, the mould body is first heated in a helium atmosphere to a temperature between 1600‹ and 1725‹ C., the atmosphere changed to one of argon and the body sintered at between 1730‹ and 2200‹ C. As shown the process is carried out using a mandrel provided with apertures 33 to enable the escape of gases trapped between the body and the mandrel. The mandrel is mounted on a vertically movable water cooled rod 44 within an induction or resistance heated furnace 50. (For Figure see next column.)
