Abstract
1,254,492. Drawing silica glass. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 27 May, 1969 [6 June, 1968], No. 26737/69. Heading C1M. Silica glass (e.g. as tubing) is drawn from a drawing die 44 at the lower portion of a refractory metal (e.g. Mo, W) crucible 30, quartz crystals being supplied to and melted in said crucible, an atmosphere of an inert gas being maintained above the quartz fragments. The gas may be He, optionally with up to 50% Ar and/or Ne. The gas is supplied, at 1-5 p.s.i. above atmospheric pressure, via pipe 46, and preferably is supplied also, via pipe 48, to the centre of the mandrel 44. The crucible is heated by tungsten elements 22, which are disposed inside a liner 21, preferably of ZrO 2 . The double walled furnace jacket 12 is water cooled, and the space between jacket 12 and liner 21 may be filled with ZrO 2 powder. The heating space between liner 21 and crucible 30 may be filled with a 80% N 2 , 20% H 2 (by volume) gas mixture. The position of the crucible 30 in the furnace may be altered vertically.
