Abstract

1421550 Apparatus for measuring areas FORTH INSTRUMENTS Ltd 16 Jan 1974 [29 Dec 1972] 60091/72 Heading G1A Apparatus for measuring the surface area of an article comprises an imperforate conveyor belt with a surface of low reflectivity and a pulse generator whose frequency is a function of its speed and means for illuminating a conveyed article from above and energizing such of a series of photo-cells across and above the article as can receive light reflected from it, a pulse counter 12, supplied by AND gates 11, a ring counter and a display unit 13 indicating the area of the article. A pulse is only transmitted over line 11a if the AND gate receives a pulse from both a photo-cell and a stage 1, 2--n, of a ring counter. The scanning head incorporates a display unit and equally spaced photo-cells alternate with light sources mounted on an axis normal to the belt axis. The pulse generator is an electronic one 10 if the belt speed is constant, if not, a mechanical one 10a. Comparator 14 receives from counter 12 and code switch 15 and causes display 16 to indicate the code, while recorder 17 records the total area. The counter may reset automatically. If the distance between photo-cells is 1 inch and the belt travels 1.44" between pulses the pulse counter can be arranged to read in square feet.
