1421137 IC engine exhaust pipes W E WOOLLENWEBER 6 Dec 1972 56222/72 Addition to 1420607 Heading F1B An exhaust system for an internal combusion engine comprises at least two ducts for receiving exhaust gases, the two ducts joining to form a common duct, in such a manner that one of said ducts surrounds at least 160 degrees of the other duct at the point at which they join. A six cylinder engine in which the firing order is 1-5-3-6- 2-4 exhausts into ducts 32, 34, 36, 38, 40 and 42. Ducts 32 and 34 merge to form a common duct 44 at the point 46, the duct 34 completely surrounding the duct 32 at this point. The common duct 44 then merges with the duct 36 at the point 48, the duct 36 completely surrounding the duct 44 at this point. The ducts 50 and 52 resulting from the mergers feed into the housing 54 of a turbine which is part of a turbo-charger. Figs. 5 and 6 show alternative constructions of the ducts at the point where they merge. In Fig. 5, the duct 56 surrounds 270 degrees of the duct 58 which in turn surrounds 280 degrees of the duct 60. In Fig. 6, the ducts 56 and 58 each surround 160 degrees of the duct 60. With the firing order given, the exhaust impulses occur alternately in each of the two groups of three ducts, so that each pulse aspirates each of the other two ducts in the same group. A similar arrangement for a four-cylinder engine is described.
