Abstract

1421134 Closing pipe ends; pig launchers BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 17 Jan 1973 2 Feb 1972] 4885/72 Headings F2P and F2N The open end of a pipe-line 1/2 is closed by a tubular element 3/14 and pressure fluid is admitted at 4 to axially separate annular pistons 15, which through packers 6, collars 12 and wedges 7 act on rubber inserts 11, which grip and sealingly engage the pipe-line. The pipe-line may be underwater and compressed air may be admitted at 8 to propel one or two pipeline pigs 9 through the pipe-line to clear same of water, oil or gas. A cable may then be attached at 10 to lift the pipe-line to the surface. Tension may also be applied via anchorage 10 to the pipeline during lifting to prevent undue bending.
