Abstract

1420374 Folding paper BELL & HOWELL CO 13 Dec 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 57730/73 Heading B8R A fold-pan assembly of a buckling sheet folder comprises upper and lower plates 30, 32, Figs. 2 and 3, defining a space 34 to receive sheets through an entrance 36, and an adjustable sheet stop 22 comprising a plurality of members 40 guided in slots in the plates. The stop 22 is secured to the ends of springs 48. Each spring has a coiled portion wound up in a housing 58 and an uncoiled portion 62 secured to the stop, the spring being pre-stressed so as to assume a curved cross-sectional configuration where not coiled, and also pre-stressed towards coiled condition, the two stresses being equal and acting in opposite directions. The springs are provided with rectangular apertures 66 engaging teeth of sprockets 68 on a shaft 70, which is rotated by a knob 72 to adjust the position of the stop, which is locked in adjusted position by a knob 77. The shaft 70 and housing 58 are mounted on a bar 74 pivoted to the plate 30 at 96, whereby on loosening a knob 106, the bar can be adjusted about the pivot 96 through a small angle as allowed by a pin and slot arrangement 98, so as to set the stop askew with respect to the folding rollers of the folder, and thereby enable folds to be made which are parallel to lines of printed matter on a sheet, where such lines are askew with respect to the leading edge of the sheet. The stop can be moved to the entrance to the pan to act as a deflection to prevent entrance of a sheet into the pan, and is so moved with the knob 106 loose, screws 44 on the stop engaging a bar 46 on the plate 30 so as to align the stop parallel to the rollers. An indicating assembly 80, Figs. 2 and 8, comprises a sprocket 84 mounted on the shaft 70 and having teeth meshing with apertures in a spring steel indicator scale 86 wound on rollers 88 and carrying graduated indicia visible through an opening in the assembly housing to indicate the position of the stop.
