An apparatus for automatic assembly of signatures from pre-printed black and colour sheets comprises two feeder units 1 and 2 associated with a folder unit 3 having a reciprocable knife blade 11 to form an initial fold in the associated signatures 6 and 10 (Fig. 2, not shown) to push this fold through an opening 12 into the bite of folding rollers disposed below the opening. In operation a large black signature is fed from the bottom of a supply stack 4 and registered against a register plate 5 by means of a roller 7 to a conveyer 8 which advances it to the folder 3. Similarly a smaller colour signature corresponding to half the width of the black signature is fed in synchronism with .the latter from the bottom of a supply stack and registered against a register plate 9 to be superimposed on the black signature on arrival at the folder unit 3. The plate 9 is positioned slightly off the centre line of the feeder unit 2 so that in the folder unit the edge of the colour signature abutting the register plate 9 overlaps the transverse centre line of the black signature a margin being provided for this purpose on the colour signature, which - margin is trimmed off following complete folding of the signature. When the folded signatures are subsequently slit no colour pages are facing each other and the first and last pages are black.
