Abstract
1420107 Amplifier arrangements WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 30 Jan 1973 [31 Jan 1972] 4553/73 Headings H3T and H3W In an amplifier circuit for amplifying an input signal S(t), Fig. 3, having both amplitude and phase variations including means 10 for deriving from the input signal S(t) a pair of constant amplitude phase modulated components S<SP>1</SP> 1 (t), S<SP>1</SP> 2 (t), the phase modulation of each of the two components is proportional to the arc sine of the amplitude variations of the input signal S(t) and is in the opposite sense with respect to that of the other, means 28, 29 independently amplify each of the components by the same gain factor G<SP>1</SP> and the amplified components are linearly combined at 30. The amplifiers 28 and 29 can include non- linear amplifying devices such as power oscillators using Gunn diodes, Impott diodes or magnetrons which are phase or injection locked to S<SP>1</SP> 1 (t) and S<SP>1</SP> 2 (t). In Fig. 3, the input signal S(t) is passed to a limiter 21 which provides a constant amplitude phase modulated term output p(t) and to an envelope detector 22 which provides an envelope output E(t). The subcircuit 20 can be modified (Fig. 4, not shown) by replacing the detector 22 by a synchronous detector including a mixer (23) and a LPF (24). A feedback loop, containing a high gain amplifier 11, a phase modulator 12, a mixer 14, a low pass filter 15 and a resistor 16 operate on E(t) and p(t) to produce the constant amplitude phase modulated component S<SP>1</SP> 2 (t) which contains the phase fluctuation #(t). The other component S<SP>1</SP> 1 (t) is obtained from the output of a second phase modulator 19 having the same modulation characteristic as the phase modulator 12 and fed from the output of the amplifier 11 via an inverter 18. The output from the amplifiers 28 and 29 are combined at 30. The matched modulator requirement can be removed by providing a second feedback loop with its own high gain amplifier, phase modulator &c. for producing S<SP>1</SP> 1 (t) directly from E(t) instead of indirectly from V o (t). In a modification, Fig. 5, a low frequency signal S(t) such as in the 10's or 100's of MHz is separated to produce a S<SP>1</SP> 1 (t) and S<SP>1</SP> 2 (t) which are then translated in frequency using a common oscillator 41 and a pair of mixers 42 and 43. The outputs from the mixers 42, 43 are band pass filtered at 44, 45 and fed via amplifiers 46, 47 to a combiner 30.
