Abstract

1420098 Matrix displays and circuits therefor OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 18 Dec 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 58256/72 Heading G5C [Also in Divisions H2 and H3] A display system comprises a gas discharge panel having crossed conductor arrays insulated from the gas and two square wave generators connected respectively to an array, each generator comprising a pair of series connected transistor amplifiers Q 5 , Q 5 <SP>1</SP>, diode circuits D 1 , D 2 , D 1 <SP>1</SP>, D 2 <SP>1</SP> associated with each amplifier for keeping it out of deep saturation and control means 37, 38 which render the amplifiers alternately conducting and non- conducting. The amplifiers comprise switching and load carrying transistors Q 5 , Q 5 <SP>1</SP> to which high potential V cc is applied via diodes D 4 which prevent transistors turning on in an inverted mode; bypass diodes D 5 provide a path for currents occurring in the panel when the other generator operates. The control means include NPN transistors Q 1 , Q 2 , Q 1 <SP>1</SP>, Q 2 <SP>1</SP> to which control pulses P U , P U , P D , P D are applied. Transistors Q 1 , Q 2 via transformer T 1 supply pulses to transistor Q 5 to cause it to saturate. Transistors Q 3 , Q 4 supply a potential via transformer T 2 which tends to turn Q 5 off if it is saturated. Similar transistors control transistor Q 5 <SP>1</SP>. Write and erase pulses are applied by row and column conductor diode-resistor selection matrices in series with the sustain generators.
