Abstract

1419570 Block walls A A HALA 26 Feb 1973 [2 March 1972] 9408/73 Heading E1B A cavity wall is insulated and waterproofed by foamed plastics blocks 12 having upper and lower edges 28 downwardly inclined from the face facing the inner skin to the face facing the outer skin. The term inclined includes any configuration wherein the edge on one face of the block is at a different elevation with respect to the edge on the other face of the block when the block is placed vertically. The plates are impaled on ties and spaced from the outer skin 16 by mortar which has been introduced during building this skin or blobs of adhesive or by discs which are friction fit on the ties. The outer skin is concrete blocks and the inner skin is a further layer of blocks or plasterboard or other suitable material. The outer skin may be supported on a lintel or wall plate or on a step in a structural floor in which case the outer skin has weep holes at this level. The inclined edges may be formed by separate end plastics caps on rectangular members. The inner or outer skin may be built first or both may be built simultaneously. The ties may be one piece or two part, and two discs may be provided on each tie and the blocks 12 accurately positioned therebetween. The blocks are preferably polystyrene and may be coated with a water absorbent substance. When the inner skin is plasterboard it is secured to the blocks 26 by adhesive or may be secured to horizontally or vertically extending channels which are secured to the outer skin by screws passing through the blocks 26. Joint covering strips may be provided for vertical joints between slabs 26 or they may be overlapped. Two layers of blocks 26 may be provided.
