Abstract
1419416 TWO part Coupling RADIALL 29 May 1973 [31 May 1972] 25600/73 Heading H2E To connect to individual conductors of a tape cable 9, stiff thin contact elements 5 are inserted side by side into insulating housing 1, with connection tails 4 protruding through apertures 3, the contacts being retained. by detents 7 engaging holes 18. Multiconductor tape cable 9, bent into T shape 10 after being stripped on the side intended to form the outside of the bend, is pushed into cavity 2 containing assembled contacts 5 by means of support member 12 which comprises a rigid body 14 carrying spring strip 13. The cable is stripped over a length sufficient to allow contact over both sides of the leg of the T, together with short lengths of arm, leaving the cable fully insulated outside the connector. To connect to one end of a cable, a design of connector is illustrated (Fig. 3, not shown) in which the cable end, bared on the outer face, enters parallel to the leg of the T via a slot in part 14, passes down one side and up the other of the leg of the T, and abuts against the inner upper insulating face of part F4. Variants of design of support member 12 include all'-metal' spring strips with or without separate sections for each contact or group of contacts, and a body 14 with springs on both upper and lower faces of the leg of the T. A connector (Fig. 12, not shown) having a plurality of contacts 5 assembled side by side carries support member 12 extending the full width of the connector, with side wings interlocking with grooves in the flanks of block I to hold the body 14 in place. Holes are provided for insertion of a rod from either the face with holes 3 or that with apertures 2 to release the wings of the support member.
