Abstract
1418916 Labelling machine; suction heads EASTMAN KODAK CO 20 Nov 1972 [19 Nov 1971] 53506/72 Headings B8F and B8H In an apparatus for applying labels 24 comprising a hollow applicator head 26 which can be selectively connected by solenoid valves 28, 29 to vacuum and air pressure sources 40, 60, the operation of the applicator head is monitored by a pneumatic and electrical system which can detect the presence and absence of a label on the applicator head. The monitoring system comprises a chamber 31 which is connected to an adjustable pressure source 30 and is also connected through a restricted orifice 42 to the vacuum and air pressure sources 40, 60 and the applicator head 26. A pressure-switch 32 which is responsive to the pressure in the chamber 31, is connected through a logic circuit 35 to a machine operation controller 27. When a label 24 is sucked on to the applicator head 26 and is correctly positioned the vacuum produced within the applicator head 26 causes a predetermined reduction of pressure in the chamber 31 and the pressure switch 32 closes. A signal from the logic circuit 35 is compared with the state of the pressure switch 32 to determine whether the applicator head picked-up the label correctly. The applicator head is then lowered whilst the label is heated by elements 44 in the head and when the label contacts a package 45 it is blown from the applicator head. If the label has been blown from the applicator head, the vacuum produced in the applicator head upon shutting off the blow-off pressure and re-connecting the pick-up vacuum is not sufficient to reduce the pressure in the chamber 31 by an amount sufficient to cause closing of pressure switch 32, the state of which is again compared with a signal from the logic circuit. The pick-up vacuum is then shut-off until the next label is in a position to be sucked on to the applicator head. The labels which are printed on a web 21, are detected by a photo-electric cell 23 and separated by a chopper 25.
