Abstract

1418349 Making hollow articles; cupping NATIONAL CAN CORP 2 Aug 1973 [4 Aug 1972 (2)] 36765/73 Heading B3Q Tubular articles are drawn in a single-stroke press having blank-draw stations for forming cups from metal web and an equal number of redraw stations, and means for transferring the cups laterally away from the web from each blank draw station to a corresponding redraw station. As shown there are two lines of dies spaced in the direction of web-feed, each line including two blanking and drawing punches 78, 80, 82, 84, Figs. 4A, 4B, and two redrawing punches 86, 88, 90, 92 disposed beyond the lateral edges 58, 60 of the web. Due to the offset relationship of the dies 78, 80, 82 and 84 there is either one or two idle stations between these dies and the corresponding redrawing die. After redrawing, the four streams of cams &c. are discharged through separate shoots preferably to separate ironing stations. The blanks are transferred between stations by grippers 94, 96 ...120 mounted on bars 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 72, 74, 76 which are carried at their ends by oppositely movable frames 140, Fig. 9, controlled by barrel cams 138 and followers 134 for moving the bars and grippers longitudinally. The intermediate grippers in a group, e.g. 110, 112 in the group 108-114, are mounted on a bar 178 carried by the end grippers 108, 114 of the group. The grippers to the left of the press, i.e. those in Fig. 4A, are fixed to the bars 62, 68, 72, 74 which are attached to the left-hand frame 140; those in Fig. 4B are fixed to bars 64, 66, 70, 76 which are attached to the right-hand frame 140, so that grippers on opposite sides of the press move in opposite direction and an associated bar to which a gripper is not fixed functions as a guide for the grippers. Each frame slidably mounts a pair of cross-bars 142, 144 which are movable in opposite directions, to close the grippers, by links 164 on a shaft 162 oscillated, through gears 160, Fig. 8, a rack 156 and cam followers 155, from a cam 152 on the shaft 136 driven from the press flywheel or from a separate drive. Each cross-bar 142 is fixed to two carriers 148 for the bars 66, 68, 74, 76 and each cross-bars 144 is fixed to the opposed carriers 146 for the bars 62, 64, 70; 72, the cross-bars functioning as guides for the carriers to which they are not attached. A duplicate mechanism may be provided at the right-hand side of the press to assist in actuation of the grippers. Alternatively, other means may be used to effect gripping and releasing. The gripping surfaces may be of rubber or synthetic material.
