Abstract

1417836 Grinding ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AG 19 July 1974 [19 July 1973 7 March 1974] 32104/74 Heading B3D A method for grinding cylindrical or conical holes in workpieces 1 comprises using a cylindrical or tapering grinding wheel 4 provided with an inclined end face 6, the cylindrical or tapering surface of the wheel being adjusted or dressed by a diamond, the grinding wheel being fed through the entire length of the hole so that the entire grinding depth is removed by the inclined end face in a single traverse. In apparatus for carrying out the method, a workpiece 1, Fig. 1, is mounted in a rotatable clamping device, and the grinding wheel 4 is dressed so that its external surface 8 is aligned with the desired finish size of the workpiece. The end face is dressed to have a bevel 6 and the wheel is fed axially into the workpiece, the removal of material being effected by the bevelled end face 6 and the wheel entirely penetrating the workpiece. After withdrawal from the workpiece, the bevelled end face is dressed by a diamond 7, the stroke b of which is kept constant so that a surplus part 28 remains which, after dressing of the wheel over its entire length, provides a further grinding surface. In another embodiment, the wheel is tapered, Fig. 6, and has its external surface 8 dressed by a diamond 9 and the bevelled end face dressed by a diamond 7. The axis of rotation of the wheel is inclined to that of the workpiece. In a further embodiment, the grinding wheel 15, Fig. 8, is tapered and cup-shaped, and its surface 8 is dressed by a diamond 16 on a pivoted arm to the finished size of the bore in the workpiece, the stock being removed by the bevelled end face 12 which is dressed by an abrasive roller 19 which also dresses an end of the wheel to have a surface 18. Upon radial movement of the wheel, the bevelled surface 12 removes stock in a single pass from the face 11 of the workpiece by an amount determined by the surface 18.
