Abstract

1415586 Rotary shaft seals SECMER SA 5 Sept 1973 [6 Sept 1972] 41690/73 Heading F2B A rotating shaft 1, e.g. of a mixing machine for moulding polyurethanes, is sealed where it extends through a wall of a chamber 4 by means comprising a sealing member 13 which is rotatable with the shaft and has a frusto-conical collar 13a urged by spring means 12 into sealing contact with a complementary seating 10c of a non-rotatable sealing member 10. The shaft has a driving pulley 7 and is mounted in bearings 11, 17 spaced by a sleeve 16 and the member 13 is axially slidable on the shaft and driven therefrom by pins 19 or a cover 18 screwed to the shaft engaging slots 13b in the member. The member 10 is seated in a sleeve 8 on a bore 4a in the wall and a pin 9 extending from the wall engages the sleeve 8 and member 10 to prevent them rotating. A spindle 2 screwed in the shaft extends in the chamber 4 and has mixing blades 3. A liquid, which may be one of those used in the chamber 4 preferably the most inert chemically and physically, is introduced, via a groove 8a and holes 8b and 16c, into the interior of sleeve 16 and thus on to the sealing faces of members 10 and 13 to act as a lubricant. The members 10 and 13 may be steel and their sealing faces may be coated with aluminium or tungsten carbide.
