Abstract
1414888 Ignition systems MOTOROLA Inc 8 Oct 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 46886/73 Heading F1B An ignition system includes first switching circuit means 36 with an input and an output and operable between an on and an off condition with the output thereof coupled with an ignition coil 14 for alternately energizing and collapsing the field in the ignition coil, second switched circuit means 26 operable between an on and an off condition, control means (not shown) connected to the input of the second switching means and controlling the same between the on and off condition in direct relation to the engine RPM a capacitor 34 having a first terminal connected with the output of the second switching circuit means 26 and a second terminal connected with the input of the first switching circuit means 36, and a first direct current source battery (not shown) and a resistor 27 connected to one of the first and second terminals of the capacitor, and a second direct current source battery (not shown) and a resistor 47 connected to the other of the terminals of the capacitor. The second switching circuit means is operated to one of the on and off conditions by the control means to charge the capacitor 34, through the first direct current source to operate the first switching circuit means to one of the on and off conditions to energize the ignition coil, the second switching circuit means being further operated to the other one of the on and off conditions by the control means to discharge the capacitor through the second direct current source to operate the first switching circuit means to the other one of the on and off conditions to collapse the field in the ignition coil to cause an ignition spark. Resistive means 5 1 is coupled from the first switching circuit means to the second switching circuit means to hold the second switching circuit means in the other one of the on and off conditions thereof with the first switching circuit means in the other one of the on and off conditions thereof. The ratio of current passing through the first direct current source to the current passing through the second direct current source at engine RPM above cranking speed is such that the capacitor charges to an amount less than the total capacity thereof prior to the discharge of the same thereby providing energizing of the ignition coil for a constant percentage of the total period between ignition sparks, whereas at engine cranking speed the frequency of operation of the second switching circuit means permits the capacitor to completely charge through the first direct current source to provide a constant off time of the current through the ignition coil at such cranking speed. As shown the first and second switching circuit means 36, 26 comprise first and second transistors respectively. Preferably a magnetic pick-up device (not shown) produces an output which is applied to the input terminals 19 and 20. The pick-up may be of the type disclosed in USA Specification 3390668.
