Abstract

1413945 Light guides LICENTIA PATENTVERWALTUNGS GmbH 16 Jan 1974 [10 March 1973] 01986/74 Heading G2J A light guide comprising a core of transparent material, e.g. glass or plastics, having a diameter much larger than the wavelength to be propagated, has a transparent sheath of lower refractive index which is sufficiently thin to allow a fraction of the light impinging on the core-sheat boundary at an angle of incidence greater than the critical angle to pass through the sheath. The sheath may be between 0.3 and 0.5 Ám thick, and a second sheath having the same refractive index as the core may surround the first, and a third sheath which strongly absorbs the propagating wavelength may surround the second. The core or the inner sheath may be a fluid.
