Abstract

1413523 Automatic analysis; removing liquid from container DAMON CORP 18 Oct 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 48092/72 Heading G1B Liquid is removed from a test tube 19a by inserting a probe 42 with a bulbous end 43 so that a small annular space is formed between the closed end of the tube and the probe and passing a gas stream into the probe so that it passes through the annular space removing liquid thereby. The probe can be gradually withdrawn from the test tube so as to completely remove liquid contained therein. The process is particularly suitable for a continuous clinical analysis apparatus in which a top tray 1 is furnished with a plurality of holes for accommodating probes for delivering or removing fluid from test tubes and tray 2 containing the test tubes. Probes 5 and 6 supply samples to test tubes with probes 11 and 12 supplying reagents when tray 2 is rotated. Continuing rotation of the tray allows aspiration of the sample/reagent mixture by probes 18 and 19 to a source of measurement e.g. a colorimeter. Wash liquid is introduced by probes 22 and 23 and is removed via probes 26 and 27. Further washing then takes place using supply by probes 29 and 30 and removal by probes 39 and 40. Air is sucked up probes 41 and 42 entraining water from the sides of the tube. Finally air is blown down probes 52 and 53 while the trays are moved vertically apart and the last traces of water are blown out of the test tube. Trough 35 is for liquid overflowing from the surface of tray 2. Troughs 36, 36a contain liquid maintained at selected different temperatures.
