Abstract

1413426 Rotary compressors; separating liquids from compressed gases B ZIMMERN 9 April 1973 16883/73 Headings F1F and F1N In air-compressing apparatus comprising a rotary compressor 2 driven by e.g. an electric motor 1, water separated from the compressed air in a reservoir 3 is injected into the compressor by way of a heat-exchanger 10 whereat to moderate the dimensions of the exchanger it is ensured that the temperature differential between the water in the inlet and the ambient air is 16 to 40‹C, the temperatures of the compressed air and injected water being equalized before the air and water mixture reaches the reservoir and the pressure within the reservoir being maintained at six bars, at least, so as to minimize the quantity of water entrained with the out-going compressed air. The water is separated from the compressed air due to the effects of inertia and gravity and by a filter 14 as the air passes from a pipe 5, which is connected to the compressor outlet, to a discharge pipe 6. A valve 19 operated by a float 16 controls the water flow to the heat exchanger. The water enters the compressor from the heat-exchanger by way of pipes 11, 23 and a duct 24. The valve may be modified so that the whole or a proportion of the water can enter the duct 24 directly, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). The motor 1 may be replaced with a petrol or diesel engine. The compressor may be of the sliding-vane, Lysholm or worm and worm-wheel type.
