Abstract

1441039 Treating fuel supply to IC engines SIEMENS AG 17 July 1973 [17 July 1972] 34084/73 Heading C5E [Also in Division Fl] An I.C. engine installation comprises gasification means 6 to which liquid fuel and combustion air are fed to be partially burned to produce a hot fuel gas which is conducted via a duct 13, 14a, 14b to a combustion space of the engine 16, liquid fuel being added to the hot fuel gas between the gasification means G and the engine. Liquid fuel is branched off via line X upstream of the gasification means 6 and passed via valve VI to a cracking reactor a, which may contain a catalyst. The mixture resulting may be cooled in a cooler b and compressed by compressor d to a constant pressure controlled by varying the speed of the motor driving the compressor. The rates of fuel and air supply to gasification means 6 are controlled by valves 5, 11 to keep the outlet temperature measured at 12 substantially constant. Air to the gasification means 6 is branched off via line 9 from the line 8, 10 to the engine 16 and passes through a heater 19, the temperature of which is controlled by the amount of exhaust gas passed through it via valve 21. Opening throttle 15 controls the amount of air and fuel gas fed to the engine, but supply of liquid fuel through valve VI to reactor a does not begin until the gas flow rate has reached its maximum, when the valve VI is opened by means of a signal from a transducer IV and thereby enriches the mixture fed to the engine. If cooler b is not provided, it is preferable to compress the air supplied to the gasification means rather than the hot fuel gas leaving it. The compressor used may be exhaust turbine driven. The cooler b may be a liquid or air cooled heat exchanger or a water injection cooler. In Fig. 1 (not shown) liquid fuel branched off via line X is added to the hot fuel gas via injection means (VII) and the mixture added to the combustion air supply at venturi (14).
