Abstract

1411858 Alkali metal salts of ester acids BAYER AG 16 Feb 1973 [17 Feb 1972] 7694/73 Heading C2C Alkali metal salts of ester carboxylic acids are prepared by neutralizing a free carboxyl group containing ester in the melt with a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide optionally in the presence of an inert solvent which forms an azeotropic mixture with water, the product having a water content of less than 15%. The starting ester acid is preferably the esterification product of a cyclic polycarboxylic acid, e.g. phthalic anhydride, and a polyalcohol, e.g. the ethoxylation products of glycerol, trimethylolethane or trimethylolpropane. Preferred products are the novel alkali metal salts of compounds of Formula I in which x=2, 3 or 4, y= 1,2, 3 or 4 and x+y= 3 to 6, R 1 is a radical of Formula II or III wherein R 3 = H or Me, R 4 = Me or Et and z=O to 6, and R 2 is a divalent organic radical which may contain Cl or Br atoms and/or a COOH group as substituents.
