Abstract

1411308 Nuclear fuel elements COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 11 June 1973 [28 June 1972] 27710/73 Heading G6C A capsule 1 for insertion within a nuclear fuel pin contains tracer gas and is made of non- fusible material 3 and provided with a fusible seal 2 which melts at a temperature below the reactor operating temperature, allowing the tracer gas to pass out of the capsule into the interior of the fuel pin. A non-fusible porous plug 8 may be provided to retain the fused material within the capsule. The capsule and porous plug may be made of stainless steel and the fusible seal of indium, tin, or lead. Each. fuel pin may be labelled using a specific tracer gas, e.g. mixtures in different proportions of stable isotopes of xenon and/or krypton, so that a can failure may be identified by determining the composition of the released gas.
