Abstract

A method of encasing a ceramic capsule in a gastight skin before isostatic pressing of the capsule, for example to sinter two half capsules together, is described. Each half of the ceramic capsule is externally fitted with a gastight sheath; each sheath has a projecting flange or sleeve at the open end of the half-capsule. The outer edges of these flanges are either welded directly together to close the capsule and make it gastight or welded to a ring at edge seams. Pref. the two flanges project obliquely from the external face of the capsule so that a U-shaped or V-shaped groove is formed; into this the ring is fitted and seal welded at the edges. Method is for gastight storage of used radioactive fuel or radioactive waste, typically rods. The method enables the capsule to be simply and reliably closed.
