Abstract
1411237 Electro-photography XEROX CORP 18 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 58250/72 Heading G2H An electro-photographic gravure member 1 either has lands coated with a photo-conductive layer 4, or is entirely surfaced with photoconductive material, and has valleys 3 filled with a developing medium which is liquid during development and during transfer of a developed image to a copy sheet. If the gravure member has its lands coated with photo-conductive material the shadow areas of the imaged member retain a previously applied charge, the developing medium and exposed areas lose their charge and the surface of the developing medium is distorted by electrostatic forces in the shadow areas, so that a copy sheet receives developing medium from the shadow areas and, if the developing medium is pigmented, becomes a positive print. A gravure member entirely surfaced with photo-conductive material, however, forms a distorted surface on the medium in its exposed areas, as the pigmented medium shields the photo-conductive material beneath it, and so does not lose its charge. This time the copy sheet receives a negative print. The developing medium may be solid during exposure, and be melted for development and transfer.
