Abstract

1410532 Articulated ladder for cutterhead dredger ELLICOTT MACHINE CORP 23 Jan 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 3361/73 Heading E1F An articulated ladder 16 for a cutterhead dredger comprises a first rigid part 18 adapted to be trunnioned to a hull 10, a second rigid part 20 carrying a cutterhead 22 and a rigid link 28 pivotally connecting the first and second parts. A hydraulic actuator 64 exerts a lifting force on the second part 20 and is controlled to vary the force as the hull pitches to keep the force exerted on the sea bed 100 by the cutterhead substantially constant. Material loosened by the cutterhead is removed through conduit 52 by pump 46, which is connected, through passages coaxial with bearing pins connecting the link to the ladder parts 18, 20 to a suction line 59 leading to a further pump 60 on the hull.
