Abstract
1408986 Spring motors MARVIN GLASS ASSOCIATES 1 Oct 1973 45741/73 Heading F2S [Also in Divisions A5-A6] A toy vehicle (see Divisions A5-A6) has a spring motor wound by turning a rear wheel 26a, Fig. 5, backwards to drive through an overload slip friction coupling 56 and gears 54, 50 to wind a spring 34 on to an output drum 36. The spring 34 is withdrawn from a storage drum 32, Fig. 3. Spring-biased detents 38, 44, Fig. 4, engaging recesses 42, 44 in the output and storage drums, respectively, when the respective final coil of the spring 34 has been unwound from either, prevent the spring from being stripped off. The side plates 64a, 64b of the spring motor are pivoted about the rear axle 28 of the vehicle, so that the spring motor may move from a forward position, Fig. 6 (not shown), to a rearward position, Fig. 7 (not shown), and vice versa. When the spring motor is pivoted to its rearward position, the moments of its mass about the toy vehicle rear axle 28 causes the front of the toy vehicle to rear up, so that the vehicle simulates a dragster making a racing start. The spring motor of the toy vehicle 20 is wound by placing the vehicle upon a winder 90, Figs. 13, 14, so that a gear 102 meshes a gear 48, Fig. 5, on the vehicle rear wheel 26a. A retaining tongue 112, Figs. 13, 14, on the winder 90 enters a slot in the rear of the toy vehicle 20, and a releasable pivot latch 116a, 116b, 116c engages the edge of a slot in the bottom of the vehicle. Oscillation of a handle 94 acts through a ratchet and pawl 108, and through a train of step-up gearing, to rotate the gear 102 and wind the spring motor 64a, &c. On release of the latch 116, &c., the toy vehicle 20 runs down a ramp 92 of the winder 90.
