Abstract

1407227 Lasers SIEMENS AG 19 Sept 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 43306/72 Heading H1C Light signals in an optical waveguide forming part of a telecommunications system are amplified by a semiconductor laser. Fig. 1 shows a diode laser amplifier body 9 matched to two optical fibres 5 by epoxy resin couplers 8. The diode and the fibres are clad with materials 10 and 6 respectively of lower refractive index. The diode pumping current is supplied by leads 11, 12, and the assembly is adhered to a body 1 by layer 2. The diode faces may be made non- parallel to prevent oscillation, Fig. 2 (not shown), or may be provided with reflectors to give multiple or zig-zag paths through the gain region, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). In Fig. 5 the active medium 18 has a region 17 adjacent the waveguide fibre and amplifies surface light emitted from the fibre; the amplified light couples back into the fibre. This embodiment avoids reflections back along the fibre since the fibre is continuous. This device may be made on a carrier body by first forming the laser then vapour depositing the associated parts of the waveguide. The amplifier dimensions preferably restrict operation to a single mode. Pumping may alternatively be by one or more luminescent or laser diodes.
