Abstract

An optical connector for connecting together one or more pairs of optical fibres (F1, F2) receives and holds the two fibres of a pair parallel with their ends (11, 12) lying in a common plane (P) at right angles to their axes. The axes of the fibres lie parallel to the focal axis of a part-shperical convex mirror (H) of the connector whose focal point (0) lies in the plane (P) with the focal axis (X) forming the median axis between the fibres. The mirror (H) is formed by a metallised portion of the connector with the space in the connector being filled by a clear resin. Light from one fibre is reflected by the mirror to the other fibre. Where two fibre bundles each containing N fibres of diameter (1) are to be connected, the fibres are arranged about the focal axis in a generally hexagonal assembly with coupled fibres being diametrically opposed. The dia. of the arrangement is (2n-1/D) where N is in the form 3n n-1 /2 and n is an integer of 2 or more.
