Abstract

1406918 Power-assisted steering mechanism TRW Inc 21 March 1973 [20 April 1972] 13636/73 Heading B7H A power steering control valve 29 includes a valve sleeve 53 comprising first and second sintered metal elements 90, 91 bonded together by heat treatment, the elements 90, 91 having inter-engaging lugs 100-103 and recesses 116, 119 which provide axially extending bonding surfaces. The element 91 is inserted in a bore 113 in one end of the element 90, a longitudinal rib on the wall of the bore 113 engaging in a groove in the element 91 to ensure correct alignment. Pairs of axial grooves 68, 76 (and 69, 74, not shown) in the inner surface of the valve sleeve 53 co-operate with pairs of axial grooves 79, 80 (and 81, 84, not shown) in a valve member 60 integral with an input shaft 27 when the member 60 is rotated in relation to the sleeve to control flow of hydraulic fluid to and from chambers 20, 21 on opposite sides of a piston 14. A cross shaft 18 is coupled to the piston 14 by rack and sector gears 16, 17, and a worm shaft 30 is connected to the piston through recirculating balls 87. The worm shaft 30 is connected to the input shaft 27 by a torsion bar 34, and lugs 123, 124 on the worm shaft engage the valve sleeve 53 to provide a driving connection therebetween.
