Abstract

1405774 Feeding workpieces BRUDERER AG 26 Sept 1972 [1 Oct 1971] 44445/72 Heading B3W Apparatus for the stepwise feed of a workpiece particularly of sheet metal to a press, comprising two contrarotating feed rollers rotating alternately in opposite directions, means for moving the rollers alternately towards and away from each other, i.e. into and out of feeding position, to coincide with the change in their direction of rotation and a hold down which is moved into and out of operative position as the rollers are moved out of and into feeding position respectively. As shown, the upper roller 3 is moved towards and away from the lower fixed roller 2 by means of a rocker 4 actuated by a cam 15 on a rotary shaft 14 through linkage 9, 8, 7 and a spring 5, the other end of the rocker being suspended from the feed roller frame by a spring 6. A hold down 16 is pivoted to the rocker 4 at 16a and has at each end an arm 17 pivoted to the frame at 17a. A workpiece support 47 is adjacent the roller 2. The shaft 14 is driven by gears 36, 37 and the cam 15 is so shaped that while the roller 9 travels over portion 15a between points A and B the roller 9 is raised causing the hold down 16 to be raised and the rocker 4 to lower the roller 3 to press the sheet metal 46 against the roller 2, the rollers rotating in the feed direction. While the roller 9 travels over cam portion 15b the rocker 4 is raised and the hold down 16 lowered, the rollers 2, 3 being parted as their direction of rotation is reversed. Rotation of the shaft 14 also drives the rollers 2, 3 alternately in opposite senses via a pivoted lever 28. The lever is pivotable about a bolt 39 mounted eccentrically on a disc 38 itself eccentrically disposed and rotatable within the gear 36. The disc 38 also carries a gear 40 which meashes with a fixed ring gear, the arrangement being such that on rotation of the shaft 14 the bolt 39 reciprocates along the diameter of the gear 36. A block 33 fixed to the other end of the lever 28 is slidable in a rocker 34 which is connected to the feed rollers drive shaft 42. The feed stroke can be varied by adjusting through a spindle 31 the vertical position of a rotatable pivot 29 through which the lever 28 passes. To accommodate different thicknesses of workpiece, the lever 8 is vertically adjustable by means of a piston and cylinder unit 10; an associated nut 13 carries a height scale. To introduce a workpiece between the rollers the rocker 4 is raised at the left hand end, Fig. 2, by raising the piston 10, the other end of the rocker bearing on a bolt 18 which, if chambers 22a, 23a of a fluid pressure device are pressurized, is unable to move downwards and thus acts as a pivot for the rocker 4, causing the hold down 16 to be raised with the rocker. If the chamber 22a is not pressurized, the bolt can be lowered and the hold down is not raised with the rocker.
