One wall portion of at least one pair of opposed relatively inclined peripheral wall portions 3 on each insert abuts a further support surface 7 in the recess, said surface 7 being planar or substantially planar and parallel to the cutter plane of rotation, or forms part of a conical surface symmetrical about the cutter axis with an apex angle between 179 and 180 degrees. The arrangement is such that a cutting edge of the insert provided by the other of the opposed wall portions has a clearance angle α relative to the plane of rotation which is equal or substantially equal to the angle between the said pair of wall portions. The recesses may be formed in a support ring 12 secured to cutter body 1 and one or more locating members 11 integral with or secured to the ring or body supports another of the wall portions 3 (Fig. 2) support surface 7 may have recesses 17, 18 Fig. 4 and (8, Fig. 5, not shown) cut into it.
