Abstract
1402471 Centrifugal pumps ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 28 Sept 1972 [28 Sept 1971 26 Nov 1971 30 March 1972] 44775/72 Heading F1C [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] A pump apparatus for a central heating installation comprises a pump, a motor driving the pump, a flow regulator for the pump, and a motor-driven mixer valve having a plurality of ports and driven through a reduction gear assembly, the mixer valve being responsive to a control signal to change the condition of the valve. The pump unit shown in Fig. 1 comprises an impeller 21 driven by a motor 29, the flow-rate being adjustable by means of a by-pass valve 27 having a slotted head 26. A mixer valve T is adjusted by a reversible motor 1 connected to it through planetary reduction gearing 4, limit switches 15, 15 for the two directions of rotation being operated by a cam 13. The mixer valve T co-operates with inlets B, E and outlets A, S, Figs. 1 and 4, which are connected to a central heating installation comprising a boiler 41, radiators 43 and, optionally, an indirectly heated hot water tank 44. A room thermostat 45 controls the position of the mixer valve T and therefore the extent to which cooled water returning from the radiators 43 via the inlet B is mixed with heated water entering inlet E from the boiler 41 before the mixture is returned via outlet S to the boiler. Water returned from the hot water tank 44 may be mixed with the water returned from the radiators 43 or, as shown, kept separate from it. In other embodiments, the temperature at the boiler output or at the radiator input is also sensed and used for controlling the mixer valve. In the pump unit shown in Figs. 10 and 12, the , pump impeller 21 and the mixer valve 46 are mounted side by side. The by-pass valve 55 for adjusting the pump flow-rate is disposed in a cylindrical portion 48 of the by-pass duct 47, 48. The mixer valve 46 may be operated manually by means of a handle 49 or by means of a motor 100 and reduction gearing via a clutch comprising a leaf-spring 104 riveted to the handle, the leafspring being put into engagement with a pin 105 so as to transmit the drive from an arm p.
