Abstract

1402463 Continuous casting VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISENUND STAHLWERKE AG 19 Sept 1972 [20 Sept 1971] 43366/72 Heading B3F A easing 10 below a (copper) mould 1 defines a cavity 15, facing the cast steel strand 2 withdrawn from the mould, to receive molten metal which may break out of the portion 4<SP>1</SP> of the strand shell 4 at the location and containing means such as a wire 16 for detecting the presence of molten metal. The wire 16 forms part of an alarm system which may operate to switch off the withdrawal drive. The molten metal destroys insulation on the wire 16 to establish an electric circuit involving the mould 1 or casing 10. Alternatively, an element or pyrometer responsive to temperature or light difference may respond to the molten metal to cause switching off of the withdrawal drive. To cool the strand shell portion 4<SP>1</SP>, a non-oxidizing gas may be passed through the cavity 15. A ring 11 mounts the casing 10 releasably on the oscillated mould 1, to which a bracket 8 bearing upper guide rollers 5 is fixed. The casing includes a cooling water jacket 12 and has at least a lower surface 14 for supporting the strand shell 4 and which may be provided by a separate copper section (28). There may be a discharge channel (30) from the casing, for the liquid steel. The casing 10 may be in separate parts (e.g. two parts covering merely the two broad sides of a cast slab), two opposed parts being relatively displaceable to accommodate different strand sections.
