Abstract

1400130 Igniter or spark-plugs BENDIX CORP 21 March 1973 [23 March 1972] 13682/73 Heading F1B An igniter or spark-plug comprises an inner elongated electrode 30 having a front portion and a rear portion, an intermediate elongated insulator 40 disposed around at least a portion of the electrode, the insulator having a front portion and a rear portion, means 50 providing a pressure tight seal between the electrode and the insulator, an outer elongated metal shell 20 disposed around the electrode, the metal shell having a rear portion that has an opening therein and a front end portion 23 arranged to provide a spark gap with the end of the front end portion 32 of the electrode, and a metal sleeve 2, 4 having a front end portion 4 that has an opening therein the wall surface of which opening is mated with and annularly brazed 11 to the outer surface of the rear portion of the insulator 40 and a rear end portion 2 the outside of which has a configuration that matches the opening in the rear portion of the metal shell and is annularly welded to the rear end of the metal shell, the metal sleeve being composed of a single piece of metal that has two cylindrical portions 2, 4 of different diameters connected together by a third portion 3 having a surface of revolution that makes an angle with the axis of the cylindrical portions of between 35 and 55 degrees. In addition to the seal 50 and sleeve, 2, 3, 4 a further seal (not shown), may be provided at an internal shoulder in the metal shell.
