Abstract

1400118 Forming hollow bodies CRUCIBLE Inc 28 Sept 1973 [13 Nov 1972] 45557/73 Heading C7D A hollow body is formed under isostatic pressure from alloy powder 22 in the assembly shown, which comprises mould 12, having a mould cavity 14, and core 16. The core 16 is hollow, the interior communicating with the exterior of the mould 12, and the powder is placed between the cavity walls and the core. The assembly, held in a cylinder 24, is then heated to an intermediate temperature, e.g. 600‹F, to evaporate water, reduce oxides, and outgas the assembly, whereupon the mould is sealed and the temperature is raised to 1000‹- 2300‹F. The assembly is placed in an autoclave containing Ar, N 2 or He at 500-30,000 p.s.i. and the resulting compact has a density greater than 95% of the theoretical density. The powder is of a super alloy or Ti-based, alloy, several examples of which are given.
