Abstract

1399812 Sintered and infiltrated iron alloys BRICO ENG Ltd 13 Oct 1972 [23 Oct 1971] 49345/71 Headings C7A and C7D A sintered metal article is produced by providing a sintered skeleton comprising by weight:- 1.5 to 2.0% nickel 0.3 to 0.7% molybdenum 1 to 2% copper 0.1 to 0.3% carbon up to 2% manganese, silicon, sulphur and/or phosphorus the balance being iron, infiltrating the skeleton with copper or copper-base alloy, and case-hardening the product. Preferably, the copper or copper-base alloy comprises 8 to 25 wt per cent of the skeleton, and the copper-base alloy may contain 3% cobalt, or alternatively 5% iron and 5% manganese. The skeleton may be produced from a pre-alloy to which carbon is added in the form of graphite together with zinc stearate before pressing and sintering in an atmosphere of dry cracked ammonia or a carbonaceous endothermic gas. Carburizing or carbo-nitriding may effect the case-hardening.
