1399609 Knitting-machines TESALON ANSTALT 9 June 1972 [15 June 1971] 27016/ 72 Heading D1C In a knitting machine the position of a thread guide or carriage is sensed, and a representation of the design scanned synchronously so that the thread guide can be moved between two positions at the dictates of the reader. In a flat-bed machine an electrical detector 1 is fixed to the carriage. It includes two elements 10, 11 whose capacity varies as the carriage passes acrosss the needle bed 2, and give rise to a series of timing pulses. The pulses drive a motor which via a rack and pinion moves a photo-electric detector to scan a pattern on a drum. The drum is stepped on by an amount corresponding to the needle guage at the end of each carriage traverse. Initial positions of the drum and device are sensed photo-electrically. A rotatable thread guide is mounted on the carriage so that either of two yarns is fed according to the pattern. The guide is rotatable by a member moved by electromagnets. Corrections are incorporated to allow for response times and the movement of the guide relative to the carriage at the end of each traverse. If used with a circular machine the drum is rotated step wise by the timing pulses and the detector realigned axially at each revolution. For Figure see next column
