Abstract

1399103 Screw-and-nut actuators LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Oct 1972 [3 Sept 1971] 41134/71 Heading B8J A driving arrangement for a leadscrew 21 comprises a body 10 in which a pair of bevel gears 11, 12 is journalled. A spur gear 13 integral with the gear 12 engages teeth 17 on a flange 15 formed on a tubular drive member 14. A second flange 16 on the member 14 is formed with depressions 27 in which balls 28 are received. Similar depressions 27 in a ring 2 slidable on splines 24 on the member 14 also engage the balls 27. The ring 23 is loaded by a spring 26 so that drive from the gear 11 is transmitted through the balls 28 to the drive member 14 up to 120% of the maximum working torque. If the torque exceeds this value the balls 28 ride up the sides of the depressions 17 allowing angular rotation between the flange 16 and the ring 23 causing rollers 31 on flats on the flange 16 to jam against the body 10, arresting the drive arrangement. A ratchet wheel 36 is mounted between a thrust bearing 37 on the body 10 and the flange 15 with an interposed friction pad 38. The drive member 14 includes a ball nut 18 engaging the leadscrew 21, the nut 18 having a flange 33 with a thrust bearing 34 on one side and a friction pad 35 on the other. The arrangement holds the position of the leadscrew 21 against axial loading in either direction, while permitting the leadscrew 21 to be moved as required, and locks if the required torque is excessive. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the coupling between the input drive gear (41) and the leadscrew (51) is by means of a pair of torsion springs (52), (53).
