Abstract

1398774 Illuminating projectiles and rachets BOFORS AB 8 June 1972 [11 June 1971] 26886/72 Heading F3A In a device for dropping, e.g. a flare by parachute, a flare 4 is housed in a container 8 open at its upper end to surround a disc 3 attached to the flare, the peripheral edge of the disc having a recess to accommodate a projection 6a formed on the base of a sleeve 6 which surrounds the lower ends of a plurality of members 1 which together form a compartment 5 in which a parachute is stored. The upper part of the compartment 5 is closed by a member forming no part of the invention which is releasably secured to the upper ends of the members 1, Loose pins 7 having bevelled ends 7a pass through bores in sleeve 6 into recesses in members 1 and are retained in position by the upper end of container 8. In operation the container 8 is separated from the remainder of the apparatus by an explosive charge between the bases of the flare 4 and the container thereby freeing pins 7 and sleeve 6. A brake parachute, which is attached to members 1 applies a retarding force and the effect of this together with the effect of the charge separating load 4 and container 8 applies a load on the bevelled ends of the pins 7 which forces them radially outwards thereby allowing members 1 also to move radially outwards to free the main parachute to support the flare during its descent. Other means for releasably securing members 1 to disc 3 are described.
