Abstract

1398180 Sockets TEXTRON Inc 13 Dec 1972 57410/72 Heading B3N [Also in Division F2] A nut or bolt to which a predetermined seating torque is to be applied has a multi-lobed driving portion 12 a first part A of which is engageable by the driving formation 25 of a socket wrench 20 and is so dimensioned that the lobes 14 of the part A shear off at said predetermined torque, a second part K (Fig. 2) or 12<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 5) of the driving portion being capable of transmitting said torque without shearing to allow the nut or bolt to be unscrewed. The second part is continuous with the first part. In Figs. 2 and 5, the wrench has a counterbore 26 extending from the socket opening to the driving formation 25, to clear the second part K or 12<SP>1</SP> of the nut or bolt driving portion when the end of the socket engages a shoulder 16 of the nut or bolt. A second wrench (not shown) is needed to undo the nut or bolt once the part A has had its lobes 14 sheared off. In a modification, Fig. 7, a surface 56 at the base of the wrench socket bears on the top 58 of the nut or bolt, the socket being just deep enough to engage the part A.
