Abstract

1398124 Workpiece clamping GULLICK DOBSON Ltd 4 June 1973 [3 June 1972] 26002/72 Heading B3B A machine tool that includes a mechanism for orientating a workpiece which has a previously formed location, e.g. a previously drilled hole, relative to a datum position comprises a chuck 12 rotatably mounted on a sensing head 10 which has at least one sensing device 16, drive means to cause rotation of the chuck on the sensing head, control means responsive to the sensing device 16 being engaged by the workpiece to cause rotation of the chuck on the head 10 until the sensing device 16 senses said previously formed location, e.g. by engaging in said hole whereby driver means is stopped and the workpiece is located for a subsequent machining operation in relation to said previously formed hole. The chuck 12 comprises three jaws 14 pivotably actuated by hydraulic rams to grip the workpiece. At a rise in pressure in the hydraulic circuit controlling the rams 15 a switch is operated to supply air pressure to a reciprocal air motor 32 which acts through a pinion 33 to rotate the chuck 12. The sensing head 10 includes a plurality of sensing devices 16 on different pitch circles and a cover-plate 19 is rotated to allow a selected one to protrude. Each sensing device 16 comprises a piston 18 movable in a cylinder 17 supplied with air pressure and including a pilot tube 21. When the piston is depressed by a workpiece a pressure switch, transducer or fluidic device is actuated to initiate rotation of the chuck 12. The mechanism is mounted in a structure so that it can be rotationally indexed by a rack pinion drive 36 and moved linearly on guide bars 39.
