Abstract

1397994 Lubricants EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 17 Nov 1972 [6 Dec 1971] 53189/72 Heading C5F [Also in Division C3] Lubricating oil compositions comprise a minor proportion by weight of a viscosity index improver prepared by mechanically degrading by extrusion or milling at 500‹ to 750‹ F. and 2000 to 60,000 p.s.i.g. a copolymer of propylene and 40 to 85 weight per cent of ethylene, having a number average molecular weight of 20,000 to 200,000 and a degree of crystallinity of 1 to 25%, to produce a copolymer having substantially the same ethylene content, a number average molecular weight of 5000 to 150,000 which is at least 5000 less than that of the copolymer before degradation, and a ratio of weight average molecular weight to number average molecular weight of less than 4. The copolymer may also contain minor proportions of C 4-12 α-olefin and/or non-conjugated diene, e.g. 5 - ethylidene - 2 - norbornene, 1,4 - hexadiene and dicyclopentadiene, units. The oil may be a neutral paraffinic, naphthenic or synthetic oil, and may contain conventional metal phenol sulphides, alkaline earth petroleum sulphonates, zinc dialkyl thiophosphates, pour point depressants and ester-type viscosity index improvers such as polymethacrylates.
