Abstract
1,230,714. Lubricants; fuels. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 17 Oct., 1969, No. 51177/69. Headings C5F and C5G. [Also in Division C3] The viscosity index of a lubricating oil, gasoline, middle distillate fuel, transformer oil or grease, is improved by adding thereto a compatible blend of 3 to 20 parts by weight polyisobutylene of viscosity average molecular weight 20,000 to 200,000 and 2 to 25 parts by weight of a copolymer of 40 to 90 mole per cent ethylene and 10 to 60 mole per cent C 3-18 α- olefin, optionally with up to 10 mole per cent of a C 4-28 olefin or non-conjugated diene, the copolymer having a viscosity average molecular weight of 10,000 to 250,000 and a crystallinity of less than 25%. The polymers may be added as a concentrate in a hydrocarbon solvent, contain 3 to 20% polyisobutylene and 2 to 25% of copolymer. Many suitable olefin monomers are specified, the preferred monomers being propylene and methylene norbornene. The compositions may also comprise conventional pour point depressants, detergents, corrosion inhibitors, antioxidants, sludge inhibitors and metal deactivators. Examples describe compositions comprising mineral lubricating oils, polyisobutylenes and ethylene/propylene or ethylene/propylene/methylene norbornene copolymers.
