Abstract

1395801 Laminating method HONSHU SEISHI KK 11 Aug 1972 37505/72 Heading B5N A method of continuously producing corrugated paper block 22 from a length 1 of corrugated paper board of the type having one surface 3<SP>1</SP> plain and the other 3 corrugated, comprises feeding said length 1 longitudinally to a cutting device 2 having a plurality of cutting blades, with the corrugations of the paper board lying perpendicular to the feeding direction, cutting said length of corrugated paper board longitudinally to form a plurality of strips 1<SP>1</SP> of uniform width, the corrugations on which are parallel and coplanar, applying adhesive to one surface of each of said strips, rotating each strip through substantially a right angle about its longitudinal axis to form a row of strips, the corrugations on which are parallel but lie in respective different parallel planes, and bringing the strips in said row into contact with one another, with the corrugated surfaces of the strips contacting and adhering to the plain surfaces of the adjacent strips. An apparatus for effecting the method comprises a cutting device 2 having a plurality of cutting blades for cutting a length of the corrugated paper board fed to the cutting device, with the corrugations thereof perpendicular to the feed direction, into a plurality of strips of uniform width, the corrugations on which are parallel and coplanar, means 4 for applying adhesive to one surface of each of said strips, means 12 for rotating each strip through substantially a right angle about its longitudinal axis to form a row of strips, the corrugations on which are parallel but lie on respective different parallel planes, and guide means 15 for bringing the strips in said row into contact with one another, with the corrugated surfaces of the strips contacting and adhering to the plain surfaces of the adjacent strips. In the embodiment shown, the cutting device 2 comprises a plurality of rotary disc blades disposed in respective planes parallel to the feed direction, the adhesive applying means 4 comprises a doctor roll 5 and a transfer roller 6 disposed oppositely to a main roller 7, a guide roller 11 disposed at the right hand side of the transfer roller 6 and a feeder pipe 9. The means for rotating each of the strips through 90 degrees comprises a plurality of arcuate shaped guide surfaces 12 disposed vertically with respect to the horizontal plane in which the strips originally extend, each strip being guided with its plane surface in contact with its guiding surface 12, in an alternative embodiment, rollers may be used to rotate the strips. The strips leaving the devices 12 are fed between parallel rollers 13 and 14 and then into the combining device 15 which comprises a pair of driven side pressure belts 16 and 17 which are arranged to press the strips 1<SP>1</SP> together, the corrugated surfaces 3 of the strips being urged into contact with the plain surfaces 3<SP>1</SP> of adjacent strips. Upper and lower driven screen belts 19 and 20 are also provided to align the upper and lower edges of the strips during the combining process. Infra-red heaters or other suitable heat sources 23 may be provided above and/or below the belts 19 and 20.
