Abstract

1,133,913. Web coating apparatus. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd. 8 June, 1967 [16 June, 1966], No. 26529/67. Heading D1L. Apparatus for continuously coating a web and for controlling the degree of penetration of the coating material comprises a continuously driven transfer roll 2 means to provide said roll with a uniform layer 6 of coating material at a predetermined thickness, a backing roll 3 to support and drive the web 4 to be coated and bring the surface thereof to a predetermined distance from the surface of transfer roll 2 to form a gap which substantially equals the thickness of the layer of coating material on the transfer roll plus the desired thickness of coating on the web minus the desired degree of penetration of the coating material into the web, and a scraper blade 7 inserted into the gap, the working edge thereof operating against the direction of the travelling coating layer on the transfer roll. The scraper blade may be combined with a doctor blade the working edge of which projects further into the gap than the working edge of the scraper blade whereby the scraper blade is prevented from contacting the surface of the web (Fig. 2, not shown) and the working edge of said doctor blade may be toothed, the teeth being long enough to project out of the pool of coating material formed in the nip between the web and the transfer roll, so as to produce stripes of coating material on the web. A further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) includes a doctor knife the working edge of which is substantially parallel to and faces the working edge of the doctor blade, the two edges being adjustable to a predetermined distance apart and forming a slit through which the coating material is extruded on to the web.
