Abstract

1395087 Solvent extraction GAP CORP 2 Aug 1972 [16 Aug 1971] 36180/72 Heading C5E [Also in Division C2] Aromatic hydrocarbons are spearated from mixtures of aromatic and non-aromatic hydrocarbons by contacting said mixture with 1,3- bis-(2-pyrrolidonyl)butane to form an aromatic hydrocarbon-rich extract phase and a raffinate phase, separating the former phase and recovering the aromatic hydrocarbon therefrom (e.g. by distillation). It is preferred to use substantially equal amounts by weight of the mixture to be extracted and the 1,3-bis-(2-pyrrolidonyl)butane, the latter preferably being employed in association with 1-10% by weight of water based on the butane extractant. The examples describe the separation of toluene/heptane mixtures.
