Abstract

1,274,380. Separating hydrocarbons by extractive distillation. HEINRICH KOPPERS G.m.b.H. 29 July, 1970 [4 Dec., 1969], No. 36678/70. Heading C5E. The separation of hydrocarbon mixtures by extractive distillation using morpholine and/or a substituted morpholine as selective solvent is carried out in the presence of an amount of water up to 10% based on the volume of the selective solvent. o-Xylene or a mixture of benzene and toluene can be separated from non- aromatic hydrocarbons, propylene can be separated from propane and isoprene can be separated from other C 5 hydrocarbons using the N-formyl-, N-acetyl-, N-hydroxyethyl-, and N-propionyl-derivatives of morpholine. A mixture of water and selective solvent can be fed to one of the top trays of the extractive distillation column, the water can be introduced into the top part of the column above the inlet for the solvent, or the solvent can be added to the top part of the column and the water added to the overhead hydrocarbon vapour and then recovered from the condensed overhead and recycled to the extractive distillation or to a preceding liquid-liquid extraction.
