Abstract
1394981 Incinerators NICHOLS ENG & RESEARCH CORP 1 Oct 1973 [6 Oct 1972] 45695/73 Heading F4B An incinerator for sewage scum has a lower tank portion 12. an ignition chamber 14 above the tank and in communication with it, and an upper combustion chamber 16 communicating with the ignition chamber 14, the tank 12 having an inlet 18 for a continuous flow of sewage consisting of floatable solids in water and an outlet controlling the liquid level in the tank, ignition burners 50 and air nozzles 52, 62 in the chamber 14 and nozzles 78 for combustion air in chamber 16, the products of combustion being discharged through a gas scrubber with a lower outlet for solid materials and an upper outlet for exhaust gases. As the sewage flows through the tank oleaginous solids rise to the surface and, after twelve or more hours, sufficient has accumulated to be burned. The floated scum is agitated by fingers 42 rotating with shaft 44. The roof of chamber 14 is a shallow dome having a passage 72 in the middle. A baffle 74 over the upper end of passage 72 causes the combustion gases from chamber 14 to enter chamber 16 radially and mix with combustion air from tangentiallydirected jets 78. Fully burnt gases leave chamber 16 via passage 86 and are drawn downwardly through a duct with a butterfly control valve and a cooler to a blower which forces the gases through a water scrubber to a chimney.
