Abstract

1394844 Change-speed friction gear GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 1 Nov 1973 [1 Nov 1972] 50844/73 Heading F2D A wheel 20, e.g. a rubber-rimmed idler for transmitting drive from a stepped shaft 28 to a turntable rim 34 of a record-player, is rotatably mounted at 22 on a member 14 and positioned for different speeds by mechanism comprising a member 6 consisting of spaced long and short limbs 10, 8 joined by a portion 12, a fixed post 4 depending from a base-plate 2 and constituting a pivot for the member 6, a pin 24 extending radially from the post and coacting with a cam slot (not shown) in the portion 12 so that as the member 6 is turned about the post by a manually operated speed-selector rod 19 it is also moved axially along the post, and a pivotal connection 16 between the limb 10 and the member 14 which is biased by a tension spring 29 and has an arcuate slot 18 through which the post passes. As shown, the wheel 20 is in contact with the smaller diameter of the shaft 28. When the rod 19 turns the member 6 in the clockwise direction about the post, the connection 16 causes the wheel 20 to be withdrawn from the shaft 28 and turntable rim whilst the pin 24 and cam slot cause the wheel to be moved towards a position in alignment with the larger diameter of the shaft 28, and as the connection 16 passes a dead-centre position relatively to the post and spring, the wheel is pulled by the spring back into engagement with the turntable rim and shaft 28. Movement past thedeadcentre position may be resisted by interengaging dimples formed on the member 14 and limb 10.
