Abstract

1393916 Rolling and tensioning strip CHELYABINSKY POLITEKHNICHESKY INSTITUT IMENI LENINSKOGO KOMSOMOLA 5 Dec 1972 56101/72 Headings B3M and B3E A strip rolling mill comprises a stand having at least three rolls with parallel axes, around which the strip is to be looped, a plane normal to the axes intersecting them in points defining a succession of straight line segments located at an angle to one another of which not more than two contiguous segments are in the same straight line, drive means arranged to rotate adjacent rolls in opposite directions with peripheral speeds which increase in the direction of rolling, means for tensioning the strip both upstream and downstream of the stand, and screw-down means for adjusting the distance between adjacent rolls, there being one such means operating along each line segment and one roll being mounted in fixed chocks. The line segments may form successive angles of 70 to 110 degrees, e.g. right angles, so as to form a regular zig-zag, Fig. 1 (not shown), the first roll being mounted in fixed chocks, whereas each successive roll is mounted in chocks adjustable by a respective screw-down. In Fig. 2, the central roll 24 has a fixed axis 26, and the remaining rolls 29, 30, 31, 32 are mounted in chocks adjustable by screw-down devices 34, 33, 35, 36, so that the two middle line segments defined by axes 26, 27 and 26, 28 are at an angle of 160 to 200 degrees, e.g. 180 degrees. In either embodiment, the pass between successive rolls can be adjusted without significant alteration of an adjacent pass. The rolls may be driven by separate drives or may be geared together. The mill is preferably adjusted so that the ratio of the peripheral speeds of successive rolls equals the degree of thickness reduction effected by the pass between them.
